Terry Adams’ New NRBQ Rips Up the Iridium: Photos

NRBQ, or ‘Terry Adams’ New NRBQ’, or the band formerly known as the ‘Terry Adams Rock and Roll Quartet’, depending on who you ask, played the Iridium on Sunday, June 26. There is fervent debate among  Q-Heads about the rightful naming of this incarnation of the band. For more background on the issue you can read a statement from Terry on the NRBQ website here as well as this thoughtful article on boston.com here.

As an enthusiastic Q-neophyte lacking the decades of storied NRBQ shows under my belt to compare it to, all I can say with any authority is that this was a really enjoyable, rockin’ show in a neon-lit basement club in Times Square on a Sunday night. Hal Willner hung out with a friend at a table in the back balancing out the table of baffled European tourists near the stage in the otherwise lightly populated room. The current line up features Scott Ligon on guitar, Pete Donnelley on bass and Conrad Choucroun on drums – Art Baron and Greg Ward sat in on trombone and alto sax, respectively . Everyone in the band had plenty of chops and musicianship to fill the big shoes of their predecessors, the band served as gifted support to propel the unique vision of Adam’s music forward after 40+ years of being at it.

The band is playing selected dates in July and August – http://www.terryadams.net/appearances.html They also released a new album ‘Keep This Love Goin’, available directly from the NRBQ website.

Eilen Jewell – Photos, CD Release at Joe’s Pub

Singer-songwriter Eilen Jewell returned to NYC after her recent supporting gig with Big Sandy and His Fly-Rite boys at the Bell House. She was at Joe’s Pub on Wednesday, June 16th in support of her upcoming album ‘Queen of the Minor Key’, released June 28 by Signature Sounds. Jewell performed with a trio of backing musicians, Jason Beck (drums) and Johnny Sciascia (bass) who provided simple and supportive background leaving lots of room for guitarist Jerry Miller’s versatile and ornate twang.  Eilen’s cool, economically focused voice came though most strongly on the beautiful ballad ‘Over Again’ and country boogie shuffle ‘Bang Bang Bang’, a song about a deranged 2-year old cupid firing recklessly at a gun show.

Jewell is on tour through July on the East Coast

Photos: Alicia Keys at Joe’s Pub

Alicia Keys performed an intimate solo piano set for lucky fans at Joe’s Pub, a venue that she had played over a decade ago prior to the success of her debut album ‘Songs in A Minor’.  The show was announced earlier in the day via social media and had everyone at the venue a-flutter with anticipation.  My friends at Joe’s Pub needed a photographer to cover this very special event and I was lucky and appreciative to get the invite.

Laura Cantrell: Kitty Wells Dresses – Album Art

I was fortunate to work with Laura Cantrell on the album artwork for her new release, Kitty Wells Dresses: Songs of the Queen of Country Music.  It’s a beautiful album, a tribute to and exploration of the music of Kitty Wells, the first female country singer and songwriter to reach no. 1 on the country music charts.  I’d highly recommend picking up a copy HERE.

Laura had her CD release party at Hill Country in NYC last night. Below are images of the album artwork and a few images from the performance. Congrats Laura and good luck!

Syl Johnson comes to Brooklyn

I had the opportunity to do a quick portrait with Syl Johnson when he was in NY to perform and promote his excellent and exhaustive new box-set on Numero Group, Syl Johnson: Complete Mythology. I met up with him and Michael Slaboch of Numero Group at a bar in Brooklyn where Syl was just finishing a video interview and a long day of press. He was a bit wiped out from all the attention but I managed one good frame of Syl wedged in a dark corner near the window on black and white film.

When he hit the stage that night for Dig Deeper at Southpaw, it was evident that he was saving his energy for the performance. Pictured in the slideshow are the Sweet Divines (backstage and onstage).
